We went to Chez JJ twice, the first time was fantastic but the second time was like a night out in McDonalds.
The first time we went to Chez JJ we were welcomed in to what was the old 86 brasserie which used to be a throwback to the seventies with its food.
On this first occasion you could not really fault the service and the food was great throughout and all cooked perfectly. We had a great night.
This led us to go a second time…
The second time we went was a terrible experience and it is a great shame that a restaurant has gone down to this level is just 3 weeks.
We walked in and were shown to our initial table amongst a big gathering or birthday revelers. After 20 minutes of no service and deafening chatter we managed to get a waiters attention and get ourselves moved to the ground floor.
The Food
We started with Snails, A Meat Platter and Goats Cheese on toast. The service was very slow and we had to ask several times for bread and drinks. The starters were nothing special but everyone enjoyed them.
I had read on another website that the steak and frites were the best he had ever had anywhere in the world. On this occasion I could get better in McDonalds. I got served the toughest bit of rump steak along with wet soggy chips.
So, for mains we had steak and frites, 2 x Confit of duck and 1 x pigeon casserole. As I mentioned the steak and frites was terrible. One of the duck legs however was very good but the other duck leg was like eating cardboard. The pigeon on the other hand was actually very good. This is all very inconsistent for a restaurant which on the first visit was fantastic all round.
Dessert
For dessert I had chocolate pudding which was burnt, my mum had what has to be said the worst Crème Brule in the world, wet and very sloppy.
Conclusion
To Chez JJ’s credit and as I mentioned in the beginning, the first visit was fantastic but the second was probably one of the worst restaurant experiences I have had in a long while.
As the first time we went was great I would recommend giving it a try as you may catch it on a good day. Do not however believe the hype about the steak and frites.
